Last Fall, two beloved birdhouses in my front garden that I purchased 25 years ago at a community Art Fair sadly toppled over from old age. The houses had been drilled into the handle of an antique pitchfork which could no longer withstand the weather elements. I was heartbroken. I could not remember the artist who first created them, neither did I have a drill to make the necessary holes for a new pole that I purchased from Home Depot.

The toppled birdhouses in my front garden.

Fortunately, my community has a very unique Maker Space and Tool Library, and once a month, it holds a Repair Cafe. Community residents are invited to bring ANYthing that needs to be repaired — from a dress hem to a necklace to a lawn mower to a computer drive — and in my case, toppled birdhouses. And get this — the repairs don’t cost a thing — though donations are accepted.

Last month, I took my birdhouses and my new pole to the Repair Cafe. Less than an hour later, I emerged with a beautiful feathery fixer-upper thanks to craftsman, Clive Jerram and his skill and patience.

As soon as I got home, I placed my refurbished birdhouses in my front garden and less than 24 hours later, two sparrows were already moving in. Needless to say, my heart took flight!

With a name like Clive Jerram, my repair tech was, of course, from England. He was very soft spoken and so polite. After he finished with my repair and I took his photo, I told him that he was “my new personal hero.” He was instantly embarrassed and replied, “Are you flirting with me?” I assured him I was not; only expressing my gratitude.

This Repair Cafe was impressive. It was divided into areas of repair needs. For example, there were separate tables for jewelry repairs, sewing repairs (complete with sewing machine), computer repairs, small appliance repairs and broken glass, porcelain, etc. repairs. Outside, there was a section for lawn mower and weed whacker, etc. repairs and anything that needed to be sawed or soldered together.

I was amazed by how many expert repair folks showed up to help at least a 100 people holding broken picture frames, necklaces, chairs, etc. It reinforced why I am proud to live in this community.❣️

Your garden is so lovely and I’m grateful that you were able to repair your beloved birdhouses.

      Thank you, Beth.

Now if I only knew how to remove a rusted nozzle from a 100-foot garden hose. I’m sure if I took it to the Repair Cafe, someone could fix it, but am I going to haul a 100-foot hose downtown? Don’t think so. Adrienne brought over WD-40. We have tried wrenches, the brute strength of a totally built neighbor, and the nozzle refuses to budge.☹️

This is a weird comment, but the moment I saw the line of folks holding their various objects for repair, I flashed onto that scene from “Airplane” where passengers are lined up with things like a baseball bat, boxing gloves and even a gun to calm down an hysterical passenger.

What kind of warped mind immediately thinks of that scene?

      This kind!
You missed an opportunity to see if flirting with Clive would lead to a hose house call. That’s your 100 foot hose, of course.

Just now seeing this comment, Trish. It may be because I was exhausted. In a miraculous moment of strength and stubbornness around the time you posted your comment, I was able to unscrew the rusted nozzle from the hose. I don’t know if it was my strength or four rounds of WD-40 over four days or the nozzle had had enough and was more exhausted than I was. Probably all of the above. Not sure repairing my 100-foot hose would have been much of a draw for Clive, by the way. His certainly would not have been for me.😉

Only in your community would there be a repair day! Yay Greenbelt even with all of its aggravations and yay you for taking in your birdhouses. Also yay sparrows for waiting for you to get the repairs done. I am so grateful for these small victories. They are rare and we will take them however we find them.
