Let’s re-ignite Spark & Spitfire with a haunting poem that, in many ways, explains my absence the past few weeks due to a major depressive episode which is a core feature of my diagnosed clinical depression.

Adrift

by Mark Nepo

About this poem, Mark Nepo, a spiritual teacher as well as a poet, writes:

“I didn’t know this truth until I followed the depth of my feeling to its unexpected conclusion. This insight was the reward for staying open to both the beauty and the loss. Suddenly, it was clear that beauty and sadness coexist, that they open up a holiness that exists inside everything, which can’t be accessed unless we settle below our arguments with life into a spaciousness opened by acceptance.”

I am so sorry about your depressive episode.

    This is haunting.

Everything is beautiful and I am so fucking sad too.

    All the love to you.

      Thank you, dear Neola.

I thought a lot about you as I created this post knowing that you too struggle with what Churchill called, “the black dog.” The clue for me that I’m in an extended dark place is when I feel like I’m wearing wet clothes all the time. Everything feels damp. Dark and damp.

I’m heading out to my happy place in about 20 minutes where I captured the photos featured in this post last Friday at sunrise. So ironic, isn’t it, that someone who struggles with depression has an avocation of photographing sunrises?

So sorry about your depressive episode and stunned by the beauty of the sunrises you have shared here. They are hauntingly gorgeous. Who knows how dark your world might be without your effort to capture sunrises and create art? Thank you for your efforts.

You’re welcome, Beth. My world would be darker without beloveds like you.

No photographs from my sunrise walk (3.38 miles) this morning. Just wanted the exercise . . . which is also a remedy for depression.🙏❤️

I love everything about this post and especially the one who shared it with us because she has helped me to face wonder and grief for so long. Others have helped me to slowly untangle some of the brain’s defensive responses to the neglect and abuse we all suffered to some degree when too young to realize they would misinterpret much of our future. It’s hard work, like getting up early to see the sunrise each day.

So thoughtful and affirming, Trish. I’m always grateful for you and your words. ❤️🙏

Thank you for sharing this powerful & beautiful poem with us, as we journey together to that still place of acceptance & affirmation of all the realities of our days.

“That still place” — the still point of the turning universe that T.S. Eliot writes about?
