In this past Sunday’s New York Times Book Review, Barbara Kingsolver paid tribute to Wendell Berry, “the man she counted among her most important literary mentors.”

Kingsolver focused on Berry’s commitment to “the possibilities of life in a small place” and how they are a mirror to the world, “because, let’s face it, every place has its own kind of small.”

Every place has its own kind of small. This line is living in my heart at the moment because lately I’ve been wondering if I have lived too small a life. I was raised in a small town in western Pennsylvania, attended a small Christian college outside a small town in Massachusetts and now, live in a small town in Maryland in a small Coop unit with a small front and back yard. But then Kingsolver continues:

Someday I would like to be a flock of birds or a terrapin or school of fish or a tree.

Kingsolver ends her appraisal of her mentor with the last stanza of Berry’s poem, “Stay Home.” Here is the entire poem:

Is Berry being dismissive with his commands, “Don’t come with me”? Or “You stay home too”? I don’t think so. I think he’s telling me to stop chasing external ambitions and instead anchor myself in the present moment.

About Berry’s death, Kingsolver writes:

I’ll try to take those instructions, too. To stay here, continue to nurture a place, a partner, beloveds, a spiritual trust, a neighbor. To call that home, and carry on.

“A giant tree has surrendered to gravity. No, not surrendered. Accepted.”

    Love this distinction.

I grieve all the time for having lived such a small life. If I could accept my windy path I think it would be a good thing. I’m not much of a poetry person but Barbara Kingsolver is an unbelievably powerful novelist.

      “Windy path.”

Now that’s an amazing story, no?

Just what I needed. Many of my friends went off to Iceland and I stayed home. Now remaining at home is beautiful. Thank you for writing about this wisdom. I am rediscovering “accepting.”

You are very welcome, dear Charlotte.

I know that your home has become a sanctuary for you. I am grateful.

Also, speaking for myself, I think we rediscover “accepting” at least once an hour . . .

This is a gorgeous post with the pairing of photos and words: yours, Kingsolver’s and Barry’s. You convey the importance of noticing and settling into the beauty around you and inspire me to do the same. Thank you. It’s perfect wisdom for this day and every day.

Barbara Kingsolver is a favorite of mine and her new novel is on its way to me this week. Also, there is a good essay, “Writing Home” in the 9/28 New Yorker magazine about her life and work.

Thanks all around, Beth. I knew that this post would appeal to you.

(Before I forget, here is the link to the New Yorker article about Barbara Kingsolver that Beth references:)

I don’t know how it came to be that I can now more easily “settle into beauty.” Somehow, I think it settled into me!

I haven’t yet ordered Kingsolver’s new book and haven’t yet read any reviews. Let me know what you think. I will no doubt order it despite what anyone thinks. She’s one author who needs to be heard for the sake of both our inner and outer worlds.❤️

I happened to run across a book – Ordinary Time by Annie Jones – which is a memoir and essays on the topic of staying out and small town life. Have you read it?

    1. Sharon J. Anderson Avatar

No, but it’s got my name all over it! Thanks, Jeanne.❤️

Such a timely piece for me, as I contemplate NOT staying at home here in our spacious home of 30 years and moving to a not-so-spacious apartment in a senior living residence. In our final days here, this piece will remind me to be fully present in this time and in this place. It will also challenge me to to create an openness to my new space (or lack thereof) and to be fully present to all it has to offer, without a constant sense of “oh, how I miss…!” Thanks for a beautiful, thoughtful linking of your life to the life and poetry of Wendell Berry.

You are very welcome, Carol — such a lovely comment in the midst of all your seemingly never-ending attending to details. Peace and love to you.❤️🙏
