Last week, I culled old New Yorkers for new cartoons. These are a few. The last one isn’t precisely on topic of “anti-social”, but may be one of its consequences.
I can’t believe I’m up. Adrienne and I were out very late, hoping we would be able to see the Northern Lights which were to appear as far south as Maryland for the first time in a billion or so years. Alas, too much cloud cover. As the first cartoon indicates, “everything is in retrograde.”
As much as I love the cartoonist Ros Chast [first cartoon], “Sorry, this book is too good,” is NOT a new excuse for the anti-social. It is the ancient love song of the bold and the beautiful.
Pit of despair seems about right. Don’t know whether to laugh or to cry.
Right, Charlotte?!
My psychiatrist and I were talking about how miserable everyone seems to be these days. Is it the climate — real and political? I joined the Fitness Center again last week because my right knee (the left knee was replaced two years ago) is exhibiting the same alarming symptoms the left knee did before it completely went kaput. I have done my best to connect with others — per instructions from my psychiatrist not to choose to spend so much time alone — and NO ONE at the Fitness Center other than the receptionist — wanted to engage in a conversation. Everyone seemed so grumpy. No wonder I choose to walk alone in farmlands. I have more engaging conversations with the rising sun.
Pit of despair for the win! Strange weather patterns and smoke are heightening anxiety in many people who aren’t normally affected by it.
Sorry to hear about your fussy knee, but thanks for reminding me to get to the gym. I’ve been losing power without strength training and it seems that we all need to stay strong to do what needs to be done these days!
Sorry to just now be seeing this, Beth. For some reason — perhaps the pit of despair — I am not receiving notifications when someone posts a comment. The weather has been so stormy here that I shut down my computer for a couple of days and just now turned it back on @ 3:05 pm EST, Sunday, July 16. Anyhoo, thanks for your comment. Wish you lived closer because it sucks going to the Fitness Center alone. xoxo
