Ignite 3/29/19

“Elephants are useful friends/equipped with handles at both ends.” In the spirit of the poet Ogden Nash, we celebrate all things elephant today for two reasons. One, it’s my oldest friend’s birthday (Wendy and I met in senior high school), and she adores elephants; and two, it’s the release date for the new “Dumbo” movie, and Dumbo is my favorite Disney character!

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WENDY!

In your honor, my youngest sister is visiting this weekend, and this afternoon, we are going to a matinee of the new “Dumbo.” The Washington Post gave it 3.5 stars (out of four). Even the trailer made me cry. I’ll be bringing plenty of tissues.

    • Have fun at the movies! The last one “Actually…” is my favorite today. On a more serious note though, if you love elephants, read Carl Safina’s book, “Beyond Words.” However, you may need tissues for that one, too.

      • For like the zillionth time, Adrienne and I did NOT win Powerball the other night. However, I WAS reminded of this quote from Safina’s book (gifted to Adrienne and me at Christmas):

“Most people fantasize that if they won the lottery, they would quit their jobs and immerse themselves in leisure, play, family, parenthood, occasional thrilling sex; they’d eat when they were hungry and sleep whenever they felt sleepy. Many people, if they won the lottery and got rich quick, would want to live like elephants.”

        Preach it, bro.

  • Well good morning. Sharon have a wonderful weekend. Glad there is a little warmth. The movie sounds like a great idea, especially a matinee–takes me back to childhood for sure. I like the service animal–I too could use a little help with memory and would love a service animal to remember on my behalf.

    • Thanks for your comment, er, oh, that’s right, your name is Charlotte. See I have memory challenges, too.

Surprisingly, the reviews for this new “Dumbo” movie have been good! I would have seen it if they had been terrible, though. I love Dumbo’s lesson of taking what looks like one’s greatest weakness/flaw and learning to soar.

  • Love you, Sharie! Bob and I are going to go see “Dumbo” later, too (but not Thomas), and you know I rarely go see movies in a theater. If the Indians were playing, I wouldn’t leave the house, but they have the day off (after losing their opener yesterday). I love my Indians and Browns almost as much as I love elephants. Great cartoons!

  • Happy Birthday, Wendy!

I have to say, this week’s selection is quite strong. It’s hard to choose.

The first one reminds me of a joke.
Two cannibals are eating a clown. One cannibal says to the other,
“Does this taste funny to you?!”
