I watched highlights of that press conference, and I, too, had a “d” word kept coming to me: DESPICABLE.
I may be wrong. The “dummy” in these cartoons could be Vice President Pence.
Sharon, I agree. “Dummy” is more appropriate for the VP.
Both cartoons made me laugh, because they are so clever.
The cartoons are by two different cartoonists. The first one was in a 2018 New Yorker and the second in a 2006 New Yorker. What are the chances that both the ventriloquist and the dummy are wearing plaid jackets, or is that expected in the world of ventriloquy? As you know, I am no fashion maven.

Seeing the first cartoon, after yet another mass shooting, makes me think that we are all the dummies for not doing more to stop gun violence. Sensible gun laws are wise and certainly worth a try, but the dummies at the NRA refuse to stop the slaughter.
I thought about the mass shooting in Thousand Oaks, CA, too, Beth, but posted the cartoon anyway, hoping you would comment on gun control. So far this year, Americans have experienced 307 mass shootings (defined as four or more victims). That’s about one day. Unconscionable.
